Mission Directives & Gameplay
Convoy 1943 focuses on dynamic, player-driven scenarios within the broader conflict of the Battle of the Atlantic. While specific pre-set "missions" might vary by event, the core gameplay revolves around the following key activities and objectives, enabled by the addon's scripting:
Convoy Operations & Escort Duty
Core Objective: Ensure the survival of Allied or Axis convoys as they traverse hostile waters. Players can spawn and command AI convoys using the ?convoy
command, defining their start and end waypoints. Convoys consist of merchant ships (freighters, tankers) and can include AI destroyer escorts, with compositions definable by presets (?preset
command).
Player Role as Escort: Command player-controlled escort vessels (like the Flower Corvette) to protect these convoys. This involves:
- Detecting and engaging U-boats using sonar, hydrophones, and depth charges/Hedgehogs.
- Defending against Luftwaffe air attacks using AA weaponry.
- Maintaining convoy cohesion; the AI flagship navigates a pathfound route, and other convoy ships attempt to maintain formation.
- Utilizing the CRIF radio system to issue commands to the AI convoy flagship (e.g., stop, resume, follow player, adjust formation).
Threats: AI U-boats employing ambush tactics (including setting up ahead of the convoy and silent running) and torpedo attacks. AI aircraft will perform reconnaissance and bombing/strafing runs.
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) & Patrols
Core Objective: Actively hunt and destroy enemy submarines to secure shipping lanes or protect designated areas/assets. This can be a primary objective or a continuous task during convoy escort.
Player Role: Employ ASW tactics:
- Systematic searching of sectors using hydrophones (passive listening) and ASDIC/active sonar (active pinging, which also reveals your position).
- Tracking contacts and coordinating attacks with depth charges and Hedgehog mortars.
- Responding to distress calls or intelligence reports of U-boat activity.
- AI destroyers on your team will also engage in ASW, providing support.
Threats: Enemy U-boats are elusive, use evasive maneuvers, and may attempt to torpedo attacking escorts. They manage their depth and can switch between diesel and electric engines for speed or stealth.
Air Operations & Support
Core Objective: Utilize air power for reconnaissance, direct attack, or escort duties. Players can call in various AI air support units via the CRIF radio system or take direct control of certain aircraft using commands like ?control
.
Player/AI Roles:
- Scouting: Deploy scout aircraft (
?scout
command or CRIF) to search designated map sectors for enemy presence. - Air Escort: AI aircraft (fighters, PBY Catalinas, even Airships like the Akron) can be tasked to escort player ships or convoys, engaging hostile aircraft.
- Ground/Surface Attack: AI bombers can be called to attack surface targets. Players controlling bombers will manually conduct bombing runs.
- Dogfights: Engage in or witness air-to-air combat between AI fighters or player-controlled aircraft.
- Special Airship Ops: Command AI airships to deploy flares, adjust altitude, or even launch/recall parasite fighters.
Threats: Enemy AA fire from ships and opposing fighter aircraft.
Logistics & Resupply
Core Objective: Maintain combat effectiveness by managing resources. While not a standalone "mission," resupply is a critical gameplay loop.
Player Actions:
- Use the
?resupply
command to call an AI supply ship to your location. - The supply ship will attempt to rendezvous with your vessel. Once nearby and conditions are met (e.g., player ship is slow/stopped and surfaced), supplies (torpedoes, depth charges, hedgehogs) are replenished.
- Protect supply ships as they are also vulnerable targets.
Strategic Sector Control (Emergent Gameplay)
Concept: The addon features a dynamic map divided into sectors. While not a specific mission type with explicit win conditions in the script, the presence of your team's vehicles in a sector can influence its "claimed" status, visible on the map. This creates an ongoing strategic layer.
Player Impact:
- Operating within a sector contributes to its perceived control by your faction.
- Denying enemy access to sectors or establishing a forward presence can be an emergent objective.
- The map updates to show contested or team-controlled sectors, providing situational awareness.
This aspect provides a backdrop for other operations like convoy escort or patrols, adding strategic depth to player actions.
The combination of these gameplay elements allows for diverse and emergent scenarios during live events. Player initiative in spawning units, forming convoys, and responding to AI threats shapes the ongoing battle.
