Key Addon Features
Convoy 1943 aims to provide an immersive World War II naval experience within Stormworks. Discover the core gameplay elements and simulated systems that bring the Battle of the Atlantic to life.
Dynamic Team-Based Gameplay
Engage in a persistent conflict between the Allies and Axis powers. Player actions can influence the strategic situation, with a map grid system featuring sectors that can be claimed and contested by each team.
- Join either the Allied or Axis faction.
- Contribute to your team's score by completing objectives and destroying enemy assets.
- Experience a changing battlefield where territorial control matters.
Advanced Convoy & AI Fleet Operations
The heart of the addon revolves around convoys. AI-controlled merchant fleets navigate dangerous waters, while both friendly and enemy AI warships and aircraft execute tactical behaviors.
- AI Convoys: Spawn and manage AI convoys with multiple merchant ships (freighters, tankers) and escorts, following complex pathfinding routes.
- Flagship Mechanics: Convoys are led by a flagship; its survival and navigation are key. If a flagship is lost, a new one may be designated.
- AI Formations: AI ships attempt to maintain formation, with options for players to command convoys to tighten or loosen their spacing via the CRIF radio system.
- Intelligent AI: Enemy U-boats, surface ships, and aircraft exhibit varied tactics including ambushes, evasive maneuvers, and coordinated attacks. Friendly AI provides support. (See AI Units page for details).
Authentic Player-Controllable Escorts
Take command of meticulously detailed escort vessels, each with unique capabilities and simulated systems. Manage your ship's resources and crew to protect the convoy. (See Escorts page for specific vessels).
- Variety of historically-inspired escort ships.
- Functional weapon systems, detection gear, and ship controls.
- NPC crew management for certain tasks (e.g., gunners).
Simulated Naval Weaponry
Experience a range of WWII-era naval armaments with simulated functionalities, including loading, firing, and ammunition management for some systems.
- Torpedoes: Basic and advanced types, launched from ship tubes (bow/stern) or aircraft. Includes simulation of tube flooding, draining, and loading procedures.
- Depth Charges: Deployed from stern racks or side-projecting K-guns. Players can set fuzing depths and fire salvos. Reloading times are simulated.
- Hedgehog Mortars: Forward-throwing anti-submarine weapon, firing a pattern of projectiles.
- Naval Mines: Deployable minefields to create hazards for enemy shipping.
- Anti-Aircraft (Flak) & Deck Guns: AI gunners and player-controlled guns engage air and surface targets. Flak explosions create a visual and area-denial effect.
- Aircraft Bombs: Dropped by AI bombers on surface targets.
Advanced Detection & Evasion Systems
Locating the enemy and avoiding detection are crucial. The addon simulates various period-appropriate detection methods and their limitations.
- Hydrophones (Passive Sonar): Detects underwater acoustic signatures. Performance affected by own ship's speed and noise. Explosions can temporarily disrupt ("blind") hydrophones.
- ASDIC (Active Sonar): Sends out "pings" to detect submerged targets, but also reveals the user's position. AI destroyers and submarines utilize this.
- Radar: (As equipped on player vessels like the Flower Corvette) Detects surface and air contacts.
- Visual Detection: Heavily influenced by simulated weather (fog, rain) and the day/night cycle, affecting AI and player spotting ranges.
- Acoustic & Radar Signatures: Ships generate varying levels of noise and radar reflectivity based on their size, speed, and if they are submerged, affecting detection chances.
Immersive Damage & Environmental Effects
Witness realistic consequences of combat and navigate a challenging environment.
- Detailed Damage Model: Ships can sustain damage, catch fire, and critical hits can disable systems or lead to sinking. Specific damage zones on larger vessels like airships.
- Sinking & Crush Depth: Vessels take on water and sink. Submarines have a crush depth; exceeding it causes progressive damage and eventual implosion.
- Aircraft Damage: Planes can be damaged, shot down, or forced to bail out. Crew may use parachutes.
- Lifeboats & Crew Survival: Disabled ships may deploy lifeboats for AI crew.
- Dynamic Weather & Time: Fog, rain, and day/night cycles impact visibility and tactical decisions. Weather data (wind, fog) is available on vehicle keypads.
- Visual Effects: Explosions (including mushroom clouds for large detonations), fires, flares, and flak bursts enhance the atmosphere.
Command, Control & Communication
Coordinate with AI units and manage your assets through various in-game systems.
- CRIF Radio System: An in-vehicle interface allowing players to issue commands to friendly AI convoys (e.g., halt, follow, change formation) and request air support (escorts, scouts, bombers, airships with special abilities).
- AI Voice Lines/Notifications: AI units provide status updates and react to events (e.g., "Target detected!", "Torpedo fired!", "Fire on board!").
- Map & Markers: A dynamic map displays waypoints, detected contacts (temporary markers), and strategic events.
- Player Commands: A suite of chat commands for spawning units, managing teams, teleporting, and utility functions. (See Commands page).
Logistics & Support Systems
Managing resources and calling for support are part of the challenge.
- Resupply System: Players can request AI supply ships to replenish ammunition (depth charges, hedgehogs, torpedoes) for their vessel.
- Fast Travel System: Allows players in vehicles to quickly traverse long distances on the map to pre-set or custom coordinates, with considerations for safe arrival points.
- Scoring & Statistics: Tracks player performance (hits, sinkings) and team scores, potentially integrated with a Discord bot.
